8 ways to keep your smallest wedding guests entertained.

posted in: Uncategorized | 0

Every wedding has certain guests. There’s the portly uncle who struts around the dance floor like Patrick Swayze. The quiet ‘Goth’ cousin, sitting in the corner, who you only invited because your mum told you to. And the tipsy bridesmaid who has a little too much prosecco… at 9.30am.

But there’s one kind of guest who can make or break a wedding. The child. They can be either delightful or demonic. So how do you keep the kids engaged so that they don’t ruin your special day? Here are some ideas…

  1. Treasure hunt – The grounds are huge here at The Tudor Barn, Burnham. A treasure hunt will keep them occupied for a good hour or so as they follow the clues. Make sure everyone gets a prize too, so no tears.
  2. Goody bags – Get activity packs together to keep them busy at the table, including puzzles and colouring. Tailor them depending on their ages. But stick to crayons, not felt-tip pens. Many venues (including ours) don’t allow pens as they can damage the linen tablecloths.
  3. Disposable Camera I-Spy game – Give every kid a cheap disposable camera and a list of things to photograph. And off they go…
  4. Garden games – You can hire all kinds of games through The Tudor Barn. From giant Jenga and Connect 4, to crazy golf and table tennis. Guaranteed fun. Just ask us what’s available.
  5. Arts & Crafts table – Organise a table full of creative things to do. Beads, tubs of Lego, loom bands… Maybe get one of the older kids to oversee everything.
  6. Dance off – Set aside 10 minutes of your disco time for a kids dance competition. It’ll also wear the darling little cherubs out. Bonus.
  7. Face painter – Always popular with kids. You might get one or two grown ups having a go as well (like that tipsy bridesmaid we mentioned earlier).
  8. A big cage – Kids just love being confined to a cage in a soundproof room! (That’s a joke, of course. It doesn’t have to be soundproof.)

The Tudor Barn, Burnham, presents ‘Wedding Customs’

posted in: Uncategorized | 0

Weddings are full of rituals, traditions and customs. But have you ever wondered where they all came from? Well, here are just a handful of them.

Tying the knot – It’s not just an expression! In some weddings – like Hindu and Egyptian – the bride’s hands were tied to the groom’s to show unity and commitment. Isn’t that sweet?

Wearing white – This wasn’t a ‘thing’ until 1840, when Queen Victoria got married in a white wedding dress. Up until then, brides just wore their best dress.

Carrying the bride across the threshold – Yes, it’s a romantic gesture. And it takes the pain away if your feet are killing after all that dancing. But the real reason is to protect the bride from evil spirits waiting below. Eeek.

Confetti – Traditionally, people didn’t throw little pieces of multi-coloured paper; they threw rice or grain. And it was to encourage fertility. Saucy.

Ring finger – Engagement and wedding rings (and one day a big, fat eternity ring please) are worn on the fourth finger of the left hands. It is thought that the vein in that finger led directly to the heart.

The groom on the right – At the alter the groom is always positioned on the bride’s right side. This was to allow him to have his sword hand free in case it all kicked off with a jealous rival. We haven’t had any of those at The Tudor Barn. Yet.

Buying the bride a new pair of shoes every day forever – This isn’t exactly a traditional custom, but it’s one we’d like to start…

The Tudor Barn’s wedding trends for 2018

posted in: Uncategorized | 0

We might be only beginning summer 2017, but it’s never too early to look ahead at the wedding trends that will be hitting in 2018. Here are just a handful…

The colour of love
All-white weddings may be overtaken by lively colours. Not just dresses (pretty pastels are set to take centre stage), but elaborate and striking lighting designs and centre pieces. Pink, in particular, will be big. Timeless and elegant, it gives every wedding a vibrant highlight.

A dress to impress
Looking for a dress that makes a statement? We’ve seen a real increase in wedding dresses with capes. We’re not talking superman here, but elegant and sensual designs. They look really stunning. Another hot new trend are bows. Whether it’s a huge, bold bow on the back of the dress or a tiny, subtle detail on the waistline, pretty bows are back in style! We think they look wonderful.

A setting to stun
More and more couples are recognising that the actual wedding venue is as important as the cake, catering or flowers. Whether it’s somewhere with a large plot of land or just a distinct and sophisticated building, couples like a unique venue for their unique love. Did someone say The Tudor Barn?

With this doughnut ring…
Maybe, just maybe, the traditional tiered wedding cake has had its day. But what will takes its place? Here’s an idea… Wedding doughnuts are set to be huge. Stack them up and they look absolutely amazing. Not only that, kids love them too. Plus they’re easy to pick up and eat while you’re dancing (for example!).

So there you go. We hope that gives you something to think about.

The Tudor Barn – a little history lesson

posted in: Uncategorized | 0

farming2

As you might have guessed from the name, The Tudor Barn, Burnham, is pretty old. Actually, it’s very old. So we thought it would be a good idea to have a short history lesson on this magnificent building. Now pay attention at the back, and no chewing in class or you’ll see me after school.

With timber beams dating back to 1505, the original barn buildings started life as part of a working farm. It was owned by the Bayley family, and was passed from generation to generation. Then, in 1920 it became a convent, known as ‘The House of Prayer’. The number of nuns in the order slowly declined over time and in 1991 the few remaining moved to smaller premises in Edgware. (You can still visit the nun graveyard beyond the wooded area behind the car park.)

The year before, in 1990, bridge enthusiast Laurie Champniss was looking for suitable premises to convert into a full time Bridge Centre. He received details of a property known as “The House of Prayer”. The possibilities became clear as soon as he entered the barn and soon the buildings had been extensively renovated to high modern standards. The Bridge Club is now located in the original barn, and the derelict building adjoining the barn was rebuilt in similar style; it’s now known as the Garden Room and is where we hold our Civil Ceremonies.

Painstaking care and attention was put into the restoration in order to maintain as much of the original character as possible, but with modern standards of comfort, convenience and ease of access. Indeed, it resulted in a conservation award from the Burnham Society.

And that brings us up to today. Isn’t it lovely to think that a venue steeped in so much rich history is also the place where so many futures begin together?

That’s the lesson over. See you in maths…
